Karuna Sagari
Performance
“Towards a Vishwa Margam - I don’t consider that I am doing something ‘out of the box’ from the Bharatanatyam Margam (traditional repertoire), I am just expanding my Margam so the universe can step in.”
Karuna has performed widely in ensemble and solo productions at prestigious venues in India and abroad. Karuna Sagari’s talent in choreography has been recognised by many stalwarts in the field. Her work into ancient and medieval Tamil works such as Tevaram, Kambaramayanam, Divyaprabandham and poems from the Sangam Anthology have shown imagination and depth. She ventures into poetry both secular and sacred in other Indian languages as well.
As Karuna enjoys crafting work from alternate literature, she collaborates with extremely versatile musicians to create musical formats that embellish the syntax of the poems while lending itself seamlessly to the idiom of Bharatanatyam. Her repertoire, over the last 15 years has grown to comprise over 40 pieces from original literature spanning from the 2nd Century BCE to the 21st Century CE so her performances explore areas which are not socially, culturally or linguistically bound to the Bharatanatyam context alone.
